Always known for its natural beauty, US Highway 17 between Gardens Corner and Jacksonboro, South Carolina gained national attention as being one of the deadliest stretches of roadway in the United States. About six years ago state and local elected officials and the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Lowcountry Council of Governments and other citizens groups and concerned individuals began the arduous effort to plan and fund safety improvements that would expand the narrow two-lane roadway to four lanes while protecting the large, adjacent environmentally sensitive areas.
Already an important route for shipping container transport to and from the Port of Charleston, once four-lane widening is complete, the ACE Basin Parkway—US Highway 17 in portions of Beaufort, Colleton and Jasper Counties between Interstate 95 and Charleston, SC—will become an even greater regional economic development asset.
It would be difficult to find even one square inch of South Carolina Lowcountry that is not historically significant, and tourists traveling between I-95 and Jacksonboro will see remnants of rice plantations and cross the Harriett Tubman Bridge at the Combahee River where it is thought Tubman helped lead a nearby raid that freed over 750 slaves.
